It was fourth-and-two for the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, the score was tied 20-20, and their punter was lined up to kick to Peter Nguyen, when the entire front defensive line pulled back off the line, ostensibly to block for the return. The punter, Brock Miller, sprinted untouched for 22 yards and a first down.
Such went the key play for the Montana Grizzlies as they lost to the Thunderbirds, 30 -20. It was the second straight home loss for Montana, losing their Homecoming game to Northen Arizona by the same margin..10 points.
Peter Nguyen rushed for over 90 yards, and the Griz piled up over 200 on the ground, but when Nguyen muffed a punt in the first quarter, the Thunderbirds scored, then missed an extra point making the score 7-6.
The Griz did have some bright spots, such as the play by cornerback Joshua Denard, and a few long runs by Nguyen and Jordan Canada. The defense also sacked Southern Utah’s very talented quarterback 7 times, while he was completing 34 of 50 passes.
Up next, the Griz are on the road to play North Dakota Saturday at 1:30.
