5 Shows to Watch With Your Kids

I know, I know, you’re supposed to turn the TV off and get outside and play, especially in the summer. There are times when you just don’t feel like getting off that couch and getting out there. There always seems to be something out there waiting for you like the grass needing mowing, the weeds needing pulling or the dog poop needing scooping. Then, what do you do? What do you watch with your kids? I’ve compiled a list of the top 5 shows my family and I like to watch together. These are shows that we both can enjoy and might not rot our brains.

“Wheel of Fortune” – My kids love this show. They love to guess the words and phrase, and they love to laugh when people guess a wrong word that makes no sense. Even my 2 year-old yells out letters at the TV. It is pretty funny listening to the words your kids guess too.

“America’s Funniest Videos” – I have to admit, I used to loathe this show. But I was watching it recently with my boys and it was kind of funny. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times someone gets hit in the crotch by a kid, it is always funny (especially if you are watching that with boys). It’s always good to laugh with your kids.

“American Idol” – I’m not a huge fan, but my kids love it. My favorite episodes are the city to city auditions. There is something fun about rooting for the kid you want to win, and we always have something to talk about: who sang the best, who picked the best song, who was wearing something crazy or weird and some contestants not so great dance moves to go along with their amazing voices. I think the most important thing my kids learn from watching this show is that you can accomplish anything if you are willing to work for it (and have talent).

“Mythbusters” - I have to admit, my husband watches this show with the kids more than I do. He is way more into all the mechanical and blowing up stuff than I am. It is a great way for kids to learn science with a fun twist. They are always taking “myths,” usually stuff from movies, and trying to prove if these “myths” could scientifically happen. For example, they took the scene where the cars from “Date Night” get stuck together and drive around town, and recreated it to see if it could actually happen.

“Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” – This show can be lots of fun, but it can make you feel pretty dumb too. It becomes pretty obvious when watching this show just how long it’s been since you were in fifth grade, and just how much you have forgotten. You think it’s going to be easy, but there are quite a few questions your kid might know the answers to that you don’t. Don’t be discouraged. Have fun with it. Keep score and see who wins, you or your kid.
