The West Fork Ranger District set off a 145-acre prescribed blaze Thursday, May 1.

The fire, which will continue through Friday, is part of the School Point Ecoburn Project and the Lower West Fork Timber Sale, according to Tod McKay of the Bitterroot National Forest.

The smoke has been visible around Nez Perce Road and the West Fork Highway, near the Lone Pine helibase. Drivers are urged to use caution where fire crews are working or where smoke is heavier.

Other prescribed fires are planned this season to maintain forest health, improve wildlife habitat, reduce the potential of large wildfires in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) and post harvest slash burns.
