Hamilton resident John Ormiston has filed for the Ravalli county commission seat vacated by Matt Kanenwisher.

Ormiston filed as a Democrat. He said he used to be a Republican, but that he didn't leave the party, the party left him. He is not all that enamored of the Democratic Party either, stating he wanted to make decisions on the "best information available, not on party-line ideologies."

Ormiston, a retired Forest Service biologist, is currently on the Ravalli County Park Board and has also served on the Bitterroot Land Trust, the local chapters of the Audubon Society and the Elk Foundation.

He joins the general election race with Republican Jeff Burrows, who was appointed by the current commissioners to fill Kanenwisher's post. He was picked from a list supplied by the Ravalli County Republican Central Committee and will be running for the office in November.

Independent candidate Nancy Joy Valk is also on the ballot. She is local businessowner and has been on the Hamilton City Council since 2006 - having twice served as council president.
