Ann Curry Leaving NBC’s ‘Today’ Show

Ann Curry, we barely knew ye. Just a year after the veteran of NBC’s ‘Today‘ show took over co-hosting duties alongside Matt Lauer, it looks like she’s on her way out.

Curry took over for the departing Meredith Vieira last summer, and since then, things have not gone well. NBC execs have reportedly been unhappy with the job Curry is doing, and back in April, ‘Today’ ceded its first-place standing in the ratings — a spot it had held for 16 years — to ABC’s ‘Good Morning America.’

The experienced newswoman had been with the ‘Today’ show for 14 years in lesser roles, and sources say she’d always wanted that plum gig at the hosting desk. But once she got it, the New York Times reports, she found that “her journalistic curiosities sometimes clash[ed] with morning television realities.”

Now that it’s clear things won’t be working out, she’s hired well-known attorney Robert Barnett to represent her in the exit negotiations, which could include moving her to a spot as a foreign correspondent at NBC. But insiders say the network is nervous because “if viewers perceive that she was forced out, they may be turned off by [‘Today’], and may literally turn it off as a result.” (Maybe NBC learned a little something from that ‘Tonight Show’ fiasco after all.)

Regardless of how it all shakes out, the network reportedly wants the transition finished before it begins broadcasting the Olympics this summer.
