The Sun sent out what is called a Coronal Mass Ejection this past week. Friday night and Saturday morning, May 27-28, Earth's magnetosphere let some of that energy invade the night skies.

The aurora was seen in at least 20 states of the USA during the night and the display provided some interesting streaks and pulsing rays directly overhead here in the Bitterroot (and throughout western Montana).

Things are quiet again, but plenty of people had a chance to glimpse the colorful aurora early this weekend.

By the way, the Southern Lights were also active and reached up into New Zealand and Argentina Friday.
