As mayor of Missoula, John Engen’s interests start with public safety and prevention.  If that doesn’t address the sexual assault problem, he’s interested in knowing that an assault gets reported, that victims get the care they need, and that the city is in a position to try to bring the offender to justice.

Why would someone choose an alternative high school for their candidate teaching experience?  What was it like?  How will it effect future choices and professional assignments?  We hear this, and more, from UM graduate student Jessica Stemler… 

Alternative approaches seem to be making a difference at Willard…a difference in the lives of administrators, teachers, students, and even student teachers.  The National Education Association asked for feedback on alternative education programs.�

It takes a special kind of teacher to work in the alternative environment.  It’s still teaching, but on many days it is much more.  Steve Mutchler is an instructor at Willard.  He says his other roles include mentor, coach, and even social worker.

Willard Alternative High School fills an important void in Missoula Public Schools…a high school education for those who haven’t achieved success in the more traditional environments.  Does Willard work?  Graduating nearly 700 students in a little more than a decade would suggests the answer is a resounding “YES.”
