The westcentral Montana backcountry could be extremely dangerous in the coming days with warming temperatures. The Avalanche Advisory for April 1st warns those heading out into the woods to use extra caution. On all slopes above 5,000 feet that are steeper than 35 degrees, there is "considerable" avalanche danger. Be conservative on your decisions of routes.
All other slopes above 30 degrees that still hold snow are into "Moderate" avalanche danger.
Officials of the Beaverhead-Deer Lodge National Forest reported an avalanche on the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway in an area that usually doesn't have avalanches. Warning signs are posted in that area and the forecast calls for more dangerous conditions. The Wise River Ranger District has more information at 406-832-3178.
