The winter hours of the Big Hole National Battlefield let you visit any day of the week, except holidays.

The battlefield is just over Chief Joseph Pass from Lost Trail Pass at the south end of the Bitterroot Valley. Sixteen miles from the pass, you'll see the sign at the top of a rise. Turn left and you're into the parking lot and the renovated visitor center.
If you're coming from Wisdom, Montana, the distance is 10 miles.

The National Park Service maintains the daily hours during the winter from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for Thanksgiving on Nov 28, Christmas on December 25, New Year's Day on January 1, 2014, and federal holidays January 20 and February 17.

By the way, the visitor center has new exhibits, an introductory video and books for sale. You can wander the battlefield itself, but the trails close because of winter weather. Call for trail conditions at (406) 689-3155.
