Southeast of us is the Big Hole National Battlefield, where the Nez Perce bands of Chief Joseph clashed with the 7th US Infantry in 1877.
A newly renovated visitor center just reopened at the site with new exhibits, maps, a larger movie screen and more. Though the final details are not completed, the battlefield staff is welcoming visitors this winter to see the new facilities. A grand opening celebration is planned for spring or summer.
Now, the photo of the battlefield sign is from less snowy times in the Big Hole. But Leslie Lula of the Battlefield says there are two trails onto the battlefield that are great for snowshoes or cross country skis.
Winter hours are 10am to 5pm and more information is at Big Hole National Battlefield website.
