The same strain of pneumonia that spread through mountain sheep herds in the Bitterroot Valley and Western Montana last year has popped up again - this time in a bighorn herd in southern Park County.
The Cinnabar Mountain herd, south of Livingston, has lost five sheep since early December. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologist Karen Loveless said that three of those sheep carried the same strain of disease that affected the herds farther west in Montana. Those outbreaks killed about 600 sheep.
The Cinnabar herd has split into smaller groups, and one lamb with pneumonia was found just inside the Yellowstone National Park boundary. The Montana FWP is monitoring the situation.
