Bitterroot Kiwanis Food Drive is in Delivery Mode
Friday afternoon, the Bitterroot Kiwanis members, along with an ambitious group of middle school kids, filled 600 boxes of food and basic sundries for 300 families in the Bitterroot Valley. The club works with various public assistance agencies to select the families.
Friday, December 15, as soon as the boxes were filled they started going out the door of the Hamilton Middle School - with a trailer-load heading to the Darby area. The rest will go to families in the Hamilton area this weekend. Each delivery includes two boxes of food and other supplies to help a family in need for more than just Christmas day.
The money is raised in the preceding weeks. The club then buys the supplies for the boxes. The area grocery stores give the club deep discounts to help out during the holidays.
The food drive started with Kiwanis members Gail Lewis and Bill Delaney in the 1970s and has been an annual event ever since.
