The Montana Department of Fish Wildife and Parks worked with the local Bitterroot River Recreation Advisory Committee about usage of the West Fork and the upper reaches of the Bitterroot River at the group's first daylong meeting Monday.

The gathering included members of a variety of groups, including commercial and amateur fisherpeople, Trout Unlimited, landowners and more.

The daylong meeting dealt with how to concisely describe the current perceived problems, using data from user surveys and scientific studies of the Bitterroot River.

The committee moves to Stevensville Tuesday, January 31, with a 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. session at the conference room of the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge.

The group will come up with a "problem statement" and some fundamental objectives, which will be examined with an eye toward alternatives.

They will then schedule a date for the next meeting.
