Bitterroot River Reaches Flood Stage – Barely
The Bitterroot River reached Flood Stage at Bell Crossing at about 10:50 Friday morning. The flood stage is 11 feet at that river gauge and that’s the reading recorded on the automated measurement device. National Weather Service officials do not expect the river to rise much above flood stage.
Areas next to the river and low lying areas in the valley are expected to see flooding over the weekend. That includes streams and creeks feeding the main river channel.
Upstream, the river level at the Darby gauge is just below flood stage and might not exceed it this weekend. Still, the river is at 7.16 at 10am Friday and flood stage is 7.5, so some incidents of flooding may happen this weekend all along the Bitterroot River in Ravalli County.
The National Weather service again warns drivers that if you come across a road where water is flowing over the surface, don’t drive through it. “Turn around – Don’t drown.”
