Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Cars 3’ Dethrones ‘Wonder Woman’

It’s a pleasant Sunday afternoon in the world, which means it’s time for your weekend box office updates! While this was a disappointing weekend overall for a handful of new releases, there’s good news to be had: after a disappointing $144 million total gross last weekend, the box office bounced back to $187 million total over the past few days. That takes some of the pressure off Wonder Woman to, you know, save the summer blockbuster as we know it. Here’s the totals as of Sunday afternoon:

Watch ‘The Mummy’ Cast Film That Zero-g Sequence in This 11 Minute, 360 Degree Feature

Most cinephiles have heard that old Gene Siskel chestnut about a movie needing to be more interesting than a dinner table conversation between its stars. I would like to add the following qualifier to that adage: any Tom Cruise movie should be more interesting than a behind-the-scenes interview on Cruise performing some of the film’s biggest stunts. Cruise’s attention to detail for action sequences is legendary, and while I may not have enjoyed The Mummy, I’ve honestly had a blast watching Cruise talk about the filmmaking process in every video that Universal Pictures has released.

Pharrell’s ‘Despicable Me 3’ Music Video Is a Fever Dream of Minions, Fluffy Clouds, and Disembodied Heads

It wouldn’t be a Despicable Me movie without an original Pharrell Williams song, now would it? “Happy” topped the charts back in 2013 ahead of Despicable Me 2’s release, won an Oscar and a Grammy, and remains a staple of sorority recruitment videos and soft drink commercials to this day. For Universal’s follow-up, the singer has composed a slightly more sedate number, titled “There’s Something Special,” the music video for which was released today. There’s something going on in this video, all right, but I dunno if it’s special.

How Well Do You Know Pixar?

Everyone knows Pixar as one of the premiere animation studios on the planet. But did you know Pixar was originally part of Lucasfilm? It’s true; before Pixar became a separate company it was a division of George Lucas’ company, where it worked on creating computer technology that could be used in special effects. Its early work included some of the first computer-generated special effects in movies, including Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Young Sherlock Holmes. That’s one of the facts featured in this all-Pixar edition of You Think You Know Movies!

Glenn Close to Lead Amazon Zombie Comedy ‘Sea Oak’

We knew Amazon wouldn’t stay out of the zombie genre after Zombieland, but adding Glenn Close to lead the next venture is another matter. The Damages and Guardians of the Galaxy star will join Sea Oak, a new half-hour comedy about undead revenge.

Watch the Bat-Signal Light Up Los Angeles in Tribute to Adam West

In the most fitting tribute imaginable, the Bat-Signal lit up the skies of Los Angeles last night, in honor of the late Adam West, the first Batman of television, and one of the most beloved versions of the iconic Dark Knight (or the “Bright Knight,” as West liked to describe his more upbeat version of the character). West died of leukemia late last week; he was 88 years old.

Apple Hires Sony TV Execs to Jumpstart Original Programming

We’ve known for years that Apple had some designs on original TV, but early entries like Planet of the Apps or August’s Carpool Karaoke spinoff haven’t made major impact. That may change, as Apple hires some of Sony Pictures Television’s top representatives to spearhead the next phase.

‘Game of Thrones’ Holding Back Season 7 Screenings to Fight Leaks

Game of Thrones understandably kept Season 6 episodes under lock and key, so as to avoid any remote leak of Jon Snow’s fate. Season 7 has nowhere near the immediate cliffhanger to address, but nonetheless won’t take the chance of early screeners, likely ever again.
