The fireworks fun during Independence Day comes with a large degree of caution.

From the Consumer Product Safety Commission and KLYQ:

  • Never allow children to play with fireworks.
  • Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully ignited.
  • Keep water handy in case of fires in tall grass or other places
  • Light fireworks one at a time and back away quickly
  • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area.
  • Don't light fireworks after 11 p.m.

In Hamilton, fireworks are not allowed in the downtown area. In Missoula, most fireworks are banned inside the city limits. Fireworks are not allowed on National Forest land.

By the way, recent studies show that more than half of the fireworks injuries are burns and, no surprise, the most injured body parts - hands and fingers. The next highest injury location - the head and eyes.
