For the 52nd year, volunteers will be counting birds in the Stevensville area Saturday, December 31.

The Christmas Bird Count at Stevensville is one of many throughout the nation. The Hamilton count was a couple of weeks ago. Saturday's event will be centered at Stevensville Ranger Station on the north end of Main Street.

Groups will gather at the ranger station between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. Teams will be sent out to cover a 7 1/2 mile circle around the ranger station. Some of those observers will be at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge - a haven for wintering fowl.

The 51 annual Christmas tallies have included 158 different species. If you need more information, call 381-7679. Beginning birdwatchers are welcome.
