This Is What Ultron Will Look Like In The ‘Avengers’ Movie Sequel

This week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly goes behind the scenes on the set of the Avengers movie sequel Age of Ultron, directed by Joss Whedon — and the cover offers a first glimpse of the movie version of the tin-plated villain who’ll be giving the Avengers so much trouble. Or, technically, versions.

From what we can see from this cover, movie Ultron doesn’t offer a radical departure from recent comic depictions — aside from gratuitously naked silver lady Ultron, of course — beyond all the sort of finicky detailing that movies require and comics avoid. Ultron’s features don’t quite match the classic Ultron rictus and vertical dagger eyes, but it’s not completely off model for a character who has had so many designs that he started out looking like a free-standing dehumidifier.

Other versions of Ultron are visible in the background, confirming rumors that the movie will feature an Ultron army — a much smarter alternatve to the rather boring Chitauri army from the first movie. At least this time it’ll make sense when all the bad guys bloodlessly switch themselves off at the end of the film.

According to a preview of the issue at, the movie will see Tony Stark create Ultron so he doesn’t have to be Iron Man anymore. As in the comics, Ultron decides that the biggest threat out there is human life.

In classic Entertainment Weekly style, the cover also offers egregiously awful photoshop that turns the face of the usually very attractive Chris Evans into the strange waxy death mask of a disapproving 17th century village parson.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is released April 23rd 2015 in most territories, and May 1st in North America, and stars Robert Downey Jr., something that looks like Chris Evans, and James Spader as the voice of Ultron. Ultron was created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema.
