The West Valley Community Council will host a meeting on Thursday, Nov. 8 where representatives from local, state, and federal agencies will discuss the preliminary findings of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) investigation of the former Smurfitt Stone mill site.

Missoula County Commissioners will outline their goals for the cleanup of the site and listen to comments from people in the community. The public will also have an opportunity to hear from and ask questions of representatives from the EPA, City-County Health Department, and State Departments of Environmental Quality and Fish Wildlife and Parks.

Peter Nielsen, water quality district supervisor with the City-County Health Department says The EPA has found several areas on the property that contain harmful pollutants that could damage the environment if the area experiences a flood. He says the new owners of the Smurfitt-Stone Corporation, Rock 10 would be primarily responsible for any clean-up costs.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. on Nov. 8 and will be held at the Frenchtown Junior High School Commons.
