Firefighter Killed In Idaho Forest Fire
The US Forest Service has identified a firefighter killed in an Idaho wildfire Sunday as Anne Veseth, age 20, a seasonal firefighter for the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest.
Veseth, as native of Moscow, Idaho and a sophomore at Lewis and Clark State College In Lewiston, was apparently struck by a falling tree or debris. The cause of death will be determined by the coroner.
She was a qualified Level Two Firefighter and was on the firelines of the Steep Corner Fire about 80 miles southeast of Coeur d’Alene.
The Forest Service has a team of investigators in northern Idaho this week to understand how and why the accident occurred. The investigation is expected to take several weeks.
US Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said, “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of this brave young woman.”
Regional Forester Fay Krueger said, “We are devastated by the loss of this young woman. This is a stark reminder of the inherent dangers out men and women face every day on the fire lines of wildfires all over the country.”
