The Three Saddle Vegetation Management Project is planned for the Three Mile and Ambrose Creek areas of the Sapphire Mountains on the east side of the Bitterroot Valley.
The Bitterroot National Forest has released an Environmental Assessment of the project and is inviting public comment until September 21. The project area includes about 6,300 acres of national forest land on the Stevensville Ranger Disrict.
The project would include:

  • commercial timber harvest of 1,291 acres
  • Non-commercial thinning on 469 acres
  • Prescribed fire on 389 acres.
  • The proposal also includes decommissioning or "storing" about 9 miles of roads that are no longer used for recreation or resource management. The EA is available at the Bitterroot National Forest Supervisor's Office in Hamilton and at the Stevensville Ranger District. Comments are due by September 21 of this year at the Supervisor's Office, 1801 North 1st Street, Hamilton MT 59840.
