Gold Pan Complex of Forest Fires Continues Slow Growth
The Gold Pan Complex of fires in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness is an estimated 35,000 acres in size, with the two major fires being the Gold Pan at 34,000 and Nez Peak at about 1,000 acres.
The eastern portion of the Gold Pan Fire has backed down into the bottom of the Blue Joint Creek drainage and the northeast portion of the Gold Pan Fire was expected to reach the Magruder Road Sunday. The Magruder Corridor remains closed, but crews are keeping it cleared (see photo) to use as an emergency escape route.
Almost 300 people are on the fire, according to the Sunday morning update from fire camp. That includes five helicopters, which have been busy drooping water on the fires to try to slow the eastward movement in the Blue Joint drainage.
