Grandma’s Homemade Gravy Recipe

My mother is famous for her homemade gravy. She only makes it during the holidays, or when we have big family get-togethers. She gave me the recipe years ago, but I lost it after burning a pan of clumpy gravy. Now that I have a few years of cooking under my belt, I feel more confident in my cooking skills.

The homemade gravy recipe isn’t actually that hard. I can’t wait to try it at Christmas. This recipe works great with a nice big roast. It has two parts, but don’t be intimidated by that. Both parts are pretty simple.

Grandma’s Homemade Gravy

1 onion sliced

1/2 cup red wine

1 tablespoon garlic, minced

1 cup water

Salt and pepper to taste

When there is 1 hour of cooking time left on your roast, throw the onion, red wine, garlic, water, salt and pepper into the pan with the drippings. Cook for the last hour, and then pour the drippings into a sauce pan.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the following ingredients:

3/4 cup cold water

1/3 cup flour

2 tablespoon cornstarch

Add this mixture to the saucepan containing the drippings. Constantly stir the gravy with the whisk over medium heat until it comes to a boil. Turn off the heat and then serve.
