Today and tonight, the kids will be focused on the excitement of going door-to-door in our small town tradition of Halloween trick-or-treat. Here are some tips to keep them safe.

For the parents (From the Red Cross):

  • Make sure their costumes are flame-resistant.
  • A parent or adult guardian should always be with younger kids.
  • Send 'em out with a flashlight and reflective tape on the costumes.
  • Only visit homes with the porch light on. Never go inside.
  • Walk on the sidewalks, not the street. Look before crossing.
  • Don't cross the street between parked cars.
  • Take extra care around pets. This is a disturbing night for them.
  • For the homeowners:

  • Sweep leaves from steps and sidewalks.
  • Clear the porch and front yard of any obstacles
  • Restrain all household pets.
  • Use a glow stick in the jack-o-lantern instead of candle.
  • For the drivers:

  • Know that kids could be anywhere, not just in the popular areas.
  • Slow down, slow down, slow down!
  • Don't use your cell phone or text while driving.
  • Make sure your headlights are clean.
