The Bench Fire, also being fought by the firefighters tackling the Halstead Fire, north of Stanley, Idaho, crossed Highway 21 Friday, causing officials to close the road.

The road was closed from mile marker 122 West of Stanley to Grandjean. The Bull Trout Campground was evacuated.

The Halstead Fire has been growing consistently with hot temperatures and some strong winds. It is over 43,000 acres.

Fire officials also reported a new fire in the area of the Indian Springs Guard Station that was 15 acres in size in its first day.

Smoke from the Halstead Fire has been blown into the Bitterroot Valley, far to the north.
