High winds blew down trees and limbs and caused a power outage Wednesday.

A surge of wind hit the Bitterroot Valley early Wednesday morning, knocking over garbage cans and breaking limbs of trees.

Then, Wednesday afternoon, another set of gusts passed through the Hamilton area, knocking down at least three trees in the city limits. The wind also caused a tree to crash through power and telephone lines southeast of Hamilton on Grantsdale Road.

Power was knocked out for a large number of homes in the area. Crews had most of the power restored by sunset.

Wind, rain and low temperatures caused areas of ice and black ice throughout Western Montana Wednesday, with a large number of minor traffic accidents on Interstate 90 east of Missoula.
