Skiers can expect great conditions at the cross country ski trails at Chief Joseph Pass. Leona Rodreick of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest reported that the trails were groomed January 4 and January 6 by the Bitterroot Cross-Country Ski Club.
The snowstorm from a week ago dumped about two feet of snow on the popular trails.
The trails are free to public use and are 26 miles west of Wisdom. From Hamilton, you go to the top of Lost Trail Pass, turn left onto Montana 43 and in a very short time you'll come upon the parking areas and the main trail entrance. A half mile from the parking lot is the Gordon Reese cabin, where volunteers keep the fire going and provide a place for skiers to warm up.
