It’s “Crunch Time” For Kiwanis Food Drive
For 30 years, the Bitterroot Kiwanis have been conducting a Christmas food drive. The club started with simple a collection of food, including drop-off boxes at area grocery stores. Over the years, as the need grew, the members realized that buying caselots of discount prices from area grocery stores made it easier to put together the individual boxes of food for families in need in the valley.
The drive turned more to donations of cash instead of food and has been successfully providing help for over 200 families every year. Last year, the club helped over 280 families.
However, a major fund source dried up this year, and the club has been working to get enough money to fill boxes for about 300 families.
The food is collected and the boxes are filled in one afternoon – Friday December 16th – at the Hamilton High School commons. High School Key Club members do a lot of the heavy lifting. The boxes are then delivered to the families by Kiwanis volunteers.
