The trees around Lake Como have been attacked by the Mountain Pine Beetle. Many trees have died and others are dying, causing a safety hazard for people who visit the area.

One logging operation was completed last year and another has begun to make the area safe for recreation. Work started around the horse loading area and group camping area east of the dam. Now the boat launch area on the south side of the lake will be closed as crews thin the trees around the the launch and parking area.

Todd McKay, in a Bitterroot National Forest news release, said the closure will not affect access to the cross country ski trails, just south of the boat area. Skiers are asked to use the 550 road to access the trails.

Fishermen and others are asked to park in the north side parking lot, next to the beach and picnic area. With increased logging truck and machinery traffic, motorists are advised to use caution on the narrow forest roads.
