Learn Wilderness Skills with Bitter Root Back Country Horsemen
The Bitter Root Back Country Horsemen will have their annual Wilderness Skills Weekend Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, at the Charles Waters Campground up Bass Creek.
The free event is open to the public and sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Included will be instruction on Leave-No-Trace camping, stock containment, setting up camp, outdoor cooking, GPS navigation and SPOT satellite devices, horse grooming and hoof care, saw use, trail clearing in wilderness areas and more.
At 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Helena author and historian Kae Cheatham will present “Before the Horse: Northern Rockies Lifestyle.” Sponsored by Humanities Montana, the talk will highlight history of the people of the Northern Rockies with their dependence on dogs in pre-horse times.
