Lightning Sets off Forest Fires

Small forest fires were started by lightning storms over the Bitterroot National Forest last week.
Public Affairs Officer Tod McKay said the Birch Creek Fire was at 6 acres last Friday in the Sapphire Mountains 10 miles northeast of Corvallis with 26 firefighters and two engines on the fireline.
A fire near Sula Peak was less than an acre in size and six firefighters were on that fire Friday.
A fire in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness near Mount Jerusalem will be monitored. It’s on the West Fork Ranger District was was less than an acre in size Friday. It is a naturally occurring fire in the wilderness and will be allowed to play its role in the character of wilderness.
