Missing Plane Found in Idaho – Crashed in December
Friday, January 10, volunteers found a private plane, covered in snow, that had been missing since December 1, 2013, near the Frank Church River of No Return wilderness.
The plane was en route from Oregon to Butte, Montana, when it dropped off the radar southwest of the Bitterroot Valley in Idaho, about 150 miles northeast of Boise.
Piloting the plane was Dale Smith of San Jose, California, his son Daniel and his wife Sheree, daughter Amber and her fiance Jonathon Norton. He had radioed that he was having engine trouble before communication was lost.
Officials had suspended the search earlier in December, due to weather conditions. Volunteers and family members kept looking and found the wreckage January 10. The plane had broken apart and those on the scene said those aboard probably died on impact.
Valley County authorities will now concentrate on recovery.
