A new survey, ranking the 50 states, puts Montana near the top for fiscal conditions.

In a report published by New Mercatus Center at George Mason University, Sarah Arnett used figures from 2012 to come up with the ranking for the United States. She used four 'solvency measures' to compile the figures - Cash solvency, Budget solvency, Long-run solvency and Service-level solvency.

Top states:

  • 1 - Alaska
  • 2 - South Dakota
  • 3 - North Dakota
  • 4 - Nebraska
  • 5 - Wyoming
  • 6 - Florida
  • 7 - Ohio
  • 8 - Tennessee
  • 9 -Montana
  • 10 - Alabama

A news release stated the research was to provide a "tool for policymakers, journalists and citizens to assess each state's ability to meet its long- and short-term obligations."
