A second Montana wolf hunting season has been proposed by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission.

The general season would start Sept 1, 2012 and run until Feb 28,2013, with trapping allowed from Dec 15 to Feb 28.

Officials said the longer season would help the department get to the wolf population down to about 425 wolves.

They said the season would also help meet management objectives such as reduced impact to livestock and elk populations, yet still maintain a viable wolf population. The 2011 season had a 220 wolf quota. Hunters harvested 166.

The public may comment until June 25 to the FWP - Wildlife Bureau, Attn: Public Comment, PO Box 200701, Helena MT 59620-0701.
