In June, the National Association of RC&D Councils Conference recognized good work at the Bitterroot office.

The awards were presented at the National Association conference in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Bitterroot Resource Conservation and Development Area (RC&D) has been helping Missoula, Mineral and Ravalli County folks since 1965.

Executive Director Becki Koon (third from the left) received the "2011 Outstanding Performance by a Program Assistant" award. Becki joined the RC&D after the fires of 2000 and has been Special Projects Coordinator. She is now the Executive Director of the program and is proud of the long history of the organization, supporting over 1,800 projects since the 1960s.

Amanda Zito (second from the left) was presented the 2011 Outstanding Youth Involvement Award for her work in producing a YouTube video to get 5,000 signatures on a petition to keep the program on the federal funding programs. The effort did not stop federal support ending in April of last year, but the video started a national RC&D fan club.

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation was awarded the 2011 Outstanding Supporting Organization for its partnership with the Bitterroot RC&D in projects such as hazardous fuels reduction grants and statewide education programs on fire, beetle infestations and forest health.
