With applause from about 80 people, the ground was broken for a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton.

The facility will have three individual suites instead of the current one room (with three beds) that has been serving as the ICU since the 1970s.

Daly Hospital Foundation Director Ron Kullick said though the public fundraising drive has brought in only about half of the money required for the project, the need for ICU improvements led to the hospital board's decision to start construction.

On a sunny but cold Monday morning, the groundbreaking included hospital board members, staff and foundation members.
