The migration route for a flock of American White Pelicans called for a stopover at a favorite watering hole - the Bitterroot Valley's Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge.

The birds were swimming and snatching up fish this past week. Bob Danley of the refuge also saw them flying in circles in some thermal winds above the refuge office.

The birds will soon leave Montana, heading for areas where the temperatures stay above 40 degrees, according to Danley.
