Pelicans Swimming in a Bitterroot Pond

These eight pelicans were seen floating on one of the ponds at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge near Stevensville at the end of June.

The White Pelicans don’t plunge into the water to catch their fish like Brown Pelicans or Osprey. They have a “tip up” method, where they swim along and then dip down like many ducks do to grab unsuspecting fish.

When they fly, you can see that the wings are not completely white. They have black bands on the trailing edges.
