A study that showed early detection of infectious prion disease has been published in a national microbiology magazine.

The research team at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories, an NIAID facility of the National Institutes of Health, was under the direction of Dr. Bruce Chesebro, M.D., who was interviewed by KLYQ 1240 AM. The interview aired Thursday, October 1 and is on-line at the KLYQ YouTube site (see below).

The scientists injected infectious scrapie prion protein into the brains of mice. After 30 minutes, they began observing the immediate area of the injection. They observed newly generated scrapie protein much earlier than expected.

The study was recently published in "MBio," a publication of the American Society for Microbiology.
