Road construction crews on Fairgrounds Road hit a 6-inch natural gas line Friday afternoon, June 19, in Hamilton.

The break, located near the Montana Rail Link rail line, immediately filled the air with gas fumes and a strong north wind spread the fumes to the south along US 93. Emergency crews from NorthWestern Energy, Hamilton Police and the Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department responded and evacuations were ordered for businesses on both sides of US 93 to the south for about a block. The highway was closed to9 traffic while crews found and repaired the main gas line.

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries and most businesses returned to normal operation by 4 p.m. Friday.
