Ravalli County Sheriff Warns Against Web Rent Scam
A scam involving a home for rent on Craigslist has caught the attention of Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman.
Hoffman said a Ravalli County resident had a house listed with a real estate firm for sale. Later, the seller discovered the house listed on Craigslist for rent.
The person who listed the house as a rental had copied the photos and information from the legitimate sale listing and put it up for rent for $900 a month, with a required deposit of $600. The instructions also cautioned anyone interested to NOT contact the real estate agency listing the home for sale.
When contacted, the suspect listing the rental – Gary Mills – responded that he was going to be in West Africa for the next two years.
Sheriff Hoffman urges anyone who is suspicious about rental properties posted on-line to contact property management and real estate companies locally.
