Ravalli County amateur radio operators joined with others in the climax of "Amateur Radio Week" with a field day south of Stevensville.

The members of the local group were using a number of antennas (note the photo) and had a main control center under the white tent in a field along the East Side Highway.

The operators showed off the latest digital and voice communications, which are vital in emergency situations and have been used here in Ravalli County to connect with other areas under emergency declarations, and stand ready to help in local emergencies when other communication is unavailable.

The amateur operators, often called "Ham Radio," have also been offering instruction so others can get their license and be part of the organization.

KLYQ's Tech Guy, Leo LaPorte, recently set up his own ham radio operation and has been very active. You can hear him talk about that and other tech topics every Saturday and Sunday from 12noon to 3pm on News Talk 1240 KLYQ AM.
