The new boating regulations for the rivers around Missoula have gone into effect, as of November 26.
The rules are aimed at motorized boats on the Bitterroot, Clark Fork and Blackfoot Rivers. On the Bitterroot River, spring unrestricted motorized travel has been eliminated. Under new regulations, 20 horsepower or less motorized travel is allowed only from Oct 1 to Jan 31 for the entire river, and the rest of the year is Float Only.
Other restrictions are for the Clark Fork, mainly from Kelley Island Fishing Access to Harper's Bridge Fishing Access to St John's Fishing Access. There are no changes in the rules below St Johns.
The complete list of changes is on the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks website, which we've linked to... The New River Regulations. The site also includes a map that lets you easily see which sections of the rivers are affected.
The new rules came out of discussions about the Milltown area work on the removal of the dam.
