Work has begun on the latest improvements to the campus at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton.

The current phase of the project, which will continue through the winter, includes a new parking lot inside the fenced area, a new loop road around the buildings and another parking area on South 5th Street. Construction hours will be from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Local businesses are involved in the project.

At a community meeting, officials said the weather will be the determining factor on which parts of the project will be done during the winter months. A temporary chain link fence has been erected, which is a few feet closer to the property line than the planned permanent black, iron fence that will match the rest of the lab's fencing.

A new parking lot will be constructed in what have been vacant lots west of Hamilton's Golden Age Center. That lot will connect with a loop road that will encircle the main buildings of the lab.

There will be five phases to the project, which will include landscaping, utility work and lighting.
