Sawtooth Fire Gets New Team – Friday September 21
The Sawtooth forest fire is 45 percent contained, with uncontained portions to the west and south.
At a public information meeting Thursday evening, Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman said even though the news is generally good from the firelines, the Stage 1 Evacuation Warning will remain in effect along the eastern edge of the 5,000 acre fire.
A new incident management team under the direction of Roy Hall takes over the fire Friday evening. The size of the firefighting force is decreasing as the fire moves farther west into the wilderness. However, the winds are still a concern, especially on the south end of the fire, where the flames could get into Roaring Lion Canyon.
As of Friday morning, only the Blodgett Campground north of the fire has been reopened. The other trail closures are still in effect – Sawtooth, Roaring Lion, Ward Mountain and Canyon Creek.
Hourly air quality in Hamilton Friday morning was “Unhealthy.”
