Scary Viruses and How Our Modern World Can Spread Them

Author and journalist David Quammen has been studying global diseases for many years and one of his books, “Spillover” has been critically acclaimed.

Quammen will present a free public presentation “Ebola to Zika and Beyond: Scary Viruses in a Globalized World” in Hamilton Tuesday, October 17, at the HHS Performing Arts Center.

The writer was invited by the Rocky Mountain Laboratories to come to Hamilton and be part of their public outreach speaking series.

Quammen told KLYQ that many of the emerging viruses and diseases are not isolated incidents and are part of a general pattern that humans have been doing. He said there will be numerous photos, courtesy of National Geographic photographers. Quammen, who lives outside of Bozeman, has been writing for National Geographic for many years, including the entire text of the 2016 issue of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

“David is a gifted writer and speaker with an unmatched ability to transform scientific information into a compelling narrative,” said Marshall Bloom, M.D., RML Associate Director for Scientific Management.

The talk will begin at 7 p.m. at Hamilton High School’s PAC and is free to the public.

Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton are part of the the NIAID of the National Institutes of Health.
