The Montana Department of Transportation has officially re-opened the Skalkaho Highway 38 east of Hamilton.

The two-lane mountain road between Hamilton and Philipsburg was heavily damaged by a late winter storm. Major damage between mileposts 17 and 21.3 required reconstruction of the road, which winds through the Bitterroot and Beaverhead-DeerLodge National Forests, along steep mountainsides.

The popular Skalkaho Falls was only accessible from the Philipsburg side of the pass during the summer.

Crews finished a majority of the work this week and the road was open for traffic Thursday. However, drivers are cautioned to watch for equipment parked along the road.

The road is only open until late fall and is closed during the winter.
