The unofficial word was out last Wednesday - Skalkaho Highway - MT 38 - had reopened for the summer and fall driving season.

The official announcement from the Montana Department of Transportation came a day or two later, providing an easy drive to one of the Bitterroot's hidden treasures - Skalkaho Falls.

It's also a nice drive between Hamilton and Philipsburg - but not in a high profile vehicle like a motorhome. Don't do it. Your nerves will thank you.

Montana 38 starts south of Hamilton and can take you to Georgetown Lake and Anaconda. The pass is at about 7500 feet in elevation. The road is paved part of the way, but is a narrow, two-lane road with a steep drop-off on the side.

A word of caution - logging trucks are also using the road for a timber sale near the pass.

Driving from Hamilton, before you get to the pass, you'll see Skalkaho Falls - a favorite subject for photographers.

A cool place on a hot day. (Mike Daniels, Townsquare Media)
