Starting Friday, September 13, Stage 1 fire restrictions will be rescinded in west central Montana - including the Bitterroot National Forest. However, the restrictions will remain in force on tribal lands along the Flathead River.

Those rules restricted campfires to approved fire rings in approved campgrounds and smoking allowed only in vehicles or cleared land, according to the Northern Rockies Coordination Group.

However, in a news release, Chris Johnson said the Ravalli County and Missoula County will continue their bans on open burning.

Those who do build campfires need to remember to make sure the fire is completely out before they leave their campsite - cold to the touch!
