For 49 years, the Stevensville Christmas Bird Count has continued to amaze birders with the numbers and varieties of feathered friends found within a 7-mile radius of the Stevensville Ranger Station.

The organizers are always looking for volunteers who would like to help go out on predetermined routes to see what's out there. Experienced birdwatchers are often teamed with 'newbies,' so that fresh eyes and ears can be partnered with knowledge.

If you need more information, call Dave Lockman at 381-7679. Then be ready to gather at the Stevensville Ranger Station Saturday, December 28, between 7:30 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. to head on out on the roads.

There is also a convenient option to count birds in your own backyard - no driving required. Call Dave for more information.

The Christmas bird counts are promoted nationally by the Audubon Society.
